Indian Wine? You’re ‘avin a laf!

No really. This stuff ain’t at all bad.

You can’t get a more theatrical Indian restaurant than Porte Des Indes, nor more lovely, cheerful staff – even when we too are at our most theatrical and ebullient. Its this place – just brings it out of you!

Anyway – back to the evening. Our guide to the Indian subcontinent’s wines was Rupert, the proud importer of Sula branded wines, all cheerful and sunny (the wines, not Rupert). He had discovered Indian wine after selling his cheese business and is now a major player. What else is there to know about Rupert? Goodness knows. Rather than give us his card, he insisted on giving out the card of an Italian restaurant in Hampstead where he had just had lunch. The Sauvignon Blanc, Sula Vineyards, Nashik, India was light but refreshing though.

So we’ll turn to the Ritu wines that were also on taste.

These really were an eye opener! The Rose was universally well received – round, full, slightly spicy – easily better than the course stuff that often gets shipped to us from the South of France by smirking Frenchmen – and refreshing. I’d happily buy the stuff.

Strange that our prejudices get in the way of helping the Indians shift their wines. They fill millions of bottles a year with the stuff. And it beats those Echo Falls ubend cleaning products hands down.

Now, even better was the Shiraz, Ritu Barrique Reserve, Sahyadri Valley, Maharashtra, India that had been held in French Oak for months. This was especially good. If you find it, buy it – even if shipping costs and rarity slightly enhance the price. So what – the same is the case for Lebanese wines – and people still drink them. Well, you see them for sale.

So – to summarise. The food – vindaloo old spot pig, talapia and chips (and a whole lot in between) are reason enough to search this place out. But when complimented by genuinely enjoyable wines it’s a no brainer. If you see these guys doing a tasting with food any time soon, book it. ( Tuesday 24th July from 6:00pm – 8:30pm – £35 well spent!)
