Enough of John Parry?

By Hannah Phillips
While some of us spent our late teens testing our body’s alcohol limit (ahem), 18-year old singer-songwriter, John Parry has put his young talent to far better use with his self-released debut EP ‘Enough’.
Hailing from East London, Parry is a former winner of the XLP Arts Showcase and, boy, is he living up to the prize with new track ‘What Have I Done’.
With a broody sound that flickers between Ben Howard and Jamie T’s ‘Carry On The Grudge’, ‘What Have I Done’ is driven by gentle acoustics that gradually build around Parry’s tender croons into a wonderful, stirring crescendo. Elsewhere on the EP, ‘Awkward’ is a slightly more playful take which perfectly captures the vulnerability of adolescence, while the frustrated lyrics of title track ‘Enough’ reflect a young man paving his way – and with huge promise.
So what has John Parry done? Written a bloody good EP, that’s what. And drawing numerous comparisons to Jack Garratt, we wouldn’t be surprised to see his name popping up in BBC’s Sound Of list in the near future, either. No pressure, then.
Hear for yourself in person this Friday (4th March) at the Pop-Up Shop launch party at Chrisp Street market, Market Square, Chrisp St, London E14 6AQ. Entry is free.
