‘Kimberly Akimbo’ Hampstead Theatre – Review

So what the hell did I just see? A musical about someone dying with a terminal illness. And I don’t mean using woad while on life support. Although actually, if it had been, I’d’ve watched it too with this cast!
This show is bloody marvellous.
There. I’ve said it. The talent on stage is frankly embarrassing. There is nothing you can do but have a good time – all the while watching someone quietly die in front of your eyes. Work that out!
I’ve seen some crazy shit in my time but …
Maria Friedman is extraordinary, playing a 16 year old with a terrible aging disease. We’ve all got it, just in slower motion. She’s surrounded by, well, there isn’t a weak link anywhere – apart from the set which packed up part way through. But hey – the professionals sorted it and off we went again. Missed the skating though.
Hell, Soutra Gilmour’s set whizzed around like another character in the show. I love, love, love her ambition! With all that was going on it never distracted. How could it compete with Maria, with Alice Fearn, with Cilli Jones. All outstanding. And the harmonies – soooo good!
Yeah, I had a great time. You will too. Or your money back. Just ask the Box Office. You sad bastard.
If you want a grown up take on the show, have a peep at this.
